I knew I had something going on as far as my health was concerned, but trying to get a diagnosis or to get doctors to actually listen to me became a nightmare.
I had been living with pain, fatigue, weight gain, reflux and brain fog, going on 15 years now and really just wanted it to stop and to be able to feel 'normal' again. Most doctors just wanted to fob me off with antidepressants, they just weren't interested in what I had to say.

If someone told you they had a disease which robbed them of being able to think or speak clearly, made them forgetful almost all the time, you would think they had dementia.Then, the person continued to explain the disease caused constant fatigue, very quick weight gain, and turned exercise from enjoyable to painful, you wouldn't wish it anyone.
If the person then said it caused severe trouble in every organ of their body, caused misscarrages which broke your heart, reproductive diseases, painful, often weak bones or diseases. Helpful. Good to hear someone else write about life with the symptoms of hyperparathyroidism.
It's amazing how many doctors think people just want some meds and aren't really sick. I commend Gladys for being so brave and pushing for what she knew she needed. I'm so sorry she had to go through it but it just gives us hope that if it happens to us we can push just like she did.
This is a great book to read if you or someone you kniw has been diagnosed or is thought to have hyperparathyroidism. The author tells her personal story in such a way that is relatable and hopeful - allowing us to see there is light at the end of the tunnel. My own personal struggle was like the authors,

Ms. Quintal does a wonderful job of explaining the basics of her symptoms, research, and ultimately the treatment she receives from her doctors. Despite having her online support group and husband firmly at her side, her road to diagnosis is not an easy one. However, her courage in the face of adversity is apparent and encouraging.
This is a very quick read about the author's struggle to find a doctor truly willing to help her. I can relate to the struggle, I went through three different doctors before finally taking my health into my own hands since they no longer wanted to help. My struggle lasted six years, within two weeks of doing things my way I felt alive and that I had the quality of my life back. This is something everyone should read, don't trust the people that just want your co-pay, I spent over $10,000 and got no where. You know your body better than anyone else. Just trust it!
I really must say that being a hypothyroid patient myself, I feel that this woman really went through a hard time and has a story to tell. I am impressed that she perservered as well as she did.
Most thyroid and parathyroid patients are at some point or another told by some type of physician, more often than not an endocrinologist that they can't be feeling the way they are feeling or if they are, it's not because of their thyroid or parathyroid glands, or perhaps they are crazy and given an antidepressant. Most of the time, the doctors are the ones that are WRONG.
Long story short? Read this book if you think or if you do have thyroid or parathyroid dysfunction. After you do, you will KNOW you are NOT crazy.
